Accreditation Board
The Accreditation Board of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine Inc is a sub committee entrusted with setting of Standards for education and training of Nuclear Medicine Technologists in Australia.

The Accreditation Board has the following functions-

1. Professional Accreditation of NMTs upon completion of an Approved course of study and the Professional Development Year

2. Overseeing the Professional Development Year (PDY) and giving guidelines to departments, mentors and graduands

3. Provision of Mentors to Graduands undertaking their Professional Development Year

4. Approval of University Programsfor the Nuclear Medicine

5. Approval of Workplaces for the postgraduate training of Nuclear Medicine Technology graduates

6. Overseas Qualification Assessment for persons who have practiced Nuclear Medicine Technology in their own country and now wish to practice in Australia.

The Accreditation Board is made up of four Accredited NMTs, one physician, and a scientific representative who are all members of the ANZSNM. People are appointed to the Board for a period of four years and are selected by the Federal Committee from recommendations by SIGs within the Society. Functions of the Board are governed by the Accreditation Board Regulations

TECHNOLOGIST ACCREDITATION

Professional Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Technologists began in Australia in 1975 following a Direction by the ANZSNM to ensure that a certain standard of practice was maintained. Since then over 800 Technologists in Australia and New Zealand have been granted Accreditation by the Society. Accreditation is professional recognition of Tertiary study in Nuclear Medicine along with 12 months postgraduate training in an Approved workplace.

Accreditation states to any prospective employer that the person holding this has met the minimum standard required by the ANZSNM for a practicing NMT in Australia. Graduands who are granted Accreditation receive a certificate of Accreditation from the Society.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT YEAR (PDY) AND MENTORS

The Accreditation Board's guidelines require that all university graduates who have successfully completed their course must undertake an approved PDY to obtain accreditation by the Society.

The purpose of the Professional Development year is to instil in the graduate Technologist an understanding of the professionalism required of an ANZSNM Accredited Technologist and the role that a technologist has in the practice of Nuclear Medicine and the health care environment.

Upon successful completion of an approved course of study and commencement of work in an Accreditation Board approved workplace, applicants must apply to the Accreditation Board for entry into the Professional Development Year (PDY) programme. ANZSNM technologist Accreditation is granted at the successful completion of the PDY programme.

NOTICE RE: AVAILABLILTY OF PDY TRAINING POSITIONS.
  • The Accreditation Board of the Australia and NewZealand Society of Nuclear Medicine has become concerned about the availability of positions to enable new graduates to participate in the mandatory PDY training year in nuclear medicine in Australia.

Accreditation is not granted to graduates who fail to complete the compulsory PDY training year. Although not mandatory in all states, lack of Accreditation will limit career prospects in Australia as many states and regulators require Accreditation for licensing and/or registration.

Please note that while The Accreditation Board accredits university programs as suitable for training and requests that they assess demand for any proposed course, The Accreditation Board has no control over the number of graduates that each university produces.

The Accreditation Board is taking a number of steps to address the shortage of PDY placements.

    1) This notice on our website

    2) The Accreditation Board is doing all it can to maintain and increase the number of training positions available in Australia and New Zealand, it's major focus however must be the maintainence of the Accreditation Boards standards in PDY training.

    3) The Accreditation Board is embarking on advising federal authorities of this situation via the relevant Minister and the Office of Workplace Planning.

    4) The Accreditation Board will also lobby the relevant Minister for federal funding to support the paid PDY positions across Australia in line with the Victorian Government's Department of Human Services statewide Intern program."

The board will update this website when the situation changes

CPD NOTICE - Attention Accredited Technologists - SUBMISSION OF CPD POINTS
  • All technologists whose Accreditation fell due during 2009 have been contacted and need to submit their 26 CPD points by 31 March 2010 for ratification by the Accreditation Board at its 22 April meeting.

Accreditation revalidations are now being handled in two batches per year, depending on the due date.
If your Accreditation falls due for revalidation in the first half of 2010, you will receive notification in May about how to submit your 30 points; you will need to submit your points by 15 July for ratification at the Board's August meeting. Those due for revalidation in the second half of the year will get a letter around October for submission of points before 31 December for ratification at February Board meeting.

But at this stage, no matter when your Accreditation revalidation date, you don't have to do anything except continue to accrue and record your points until you receive the letter advising how to go about submitting your summary of points.
