Lowenthal Lecture

The Lowenthal Lecture which commenced in 1987 is a 45 minute presentation given in a Plenary Session. The subject of the lecture is in keeping with theme "The Role of physical and Biochemical Measurements in Nuclear Medicine".

Dr Gerhart Lowenthal (1930 – 2015)

Dr G.C. Lowenthal was a distinguished nuclear scientist whose work significantly contributed to radionuclide metrology and nuclear research in Australia and internationally. Since the 1960s, he served as a key member of the research staff at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), formerly the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC).

Key Achievements

  • Led a pioneering research team that established the Australian Standards of Radioactivity.

  • Represented Australia on the Consultative Committee for Standards for the Measurement of Ionising Radiations under the International Committee for Weights and Measures in Paris.

  • Served as Australia’s representative on the International Committee for Radionuclide Metrology, an independent organisation of specialists.

  • Published approximately 50 research papers in collaboration with his research group.

  • Served as an active member of AAEC/ANSTO and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine (ANZSNM).

  • Held honorary positions, including:

    • Honorary Consultant for Nuclear Medicine at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

    • Honorary Consultant in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of New South Wales.

  • Served for six years as the honorary Australasian Editor of the International Journal of Applied Radiation and Isotopes.

  • Honoured with prestigious awards:

    • Named Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite in Paris (1994) for his contributions to radionuclide metrology.

    • Appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) (1999).

"The potential for nuclear and isotope techniques to contribute to the advance of scientific knowledge appears unbounded." , Professor Helen Garnett, CEO of ANSTO (2001)

Legacy and Contributions

Dr Lowenthal’s research and leadership in nuclear science left an enduring impact on the field. His dedication to radionuclide measurement and nuclear metrology helped shape international standards and advanced scientific understanding in Australia and beyond.

He passed away on 31 October 2015, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and a body of work that continues to influence researchers and professionals in the field.
